OUTREACH DRAMA WORKSHOPS

For 31 years Theatre for Young America has offered drama classes at its theatre and at schools and community centers in the metropolitan area. Drama Workshops at school can open a whole new world to students! Drama specialists come to the classroom and conduct interactive workshops under the leadership of Sheryl Bryant, Director of Education. While learning about the art of drama, students also work on their personal voice, imagination, and body movement skills. TYA Drama Workshops increase the group's ability to communicate and work together as they learn about literature, regional history, conflict resolution, or other cultures. It's an added plus that our drama specialists' model their technique of using drama in the classroom for the classroom teachers.

OUTREACH WORKSHOPS:

1.  INTRODUCTION TO DRAMA: explore the fun of drama with class voice exercises, body movement warm-ups, imagination exercises, and a short playlet with costume pieces. "A Trip to the Circus" is the theme for preschool-through 3rd grade students. "Open Scenes" is the theme for 4th grade students through adults.

2.   PRE-PERFORMANCE DRAMA WORKSHOPS: enrich your students' theatre-going experience by coupling it with an educational workshop about the production they will attend. Actors prepare the group by providing background information, a chance to enact some of the play themselves, and a discussion of theatre etiquette when attending a play. The theme, characters, style, plot, or any other consideration directly related to the experience the students will have may be addressed. If appropriate, the actor/teachers bring interesting costume pieces or props from the production.

3.   EXPLORING CONFLICT RESOLUTION THROUGH DRAMA: focus on conflict resolution steps for problem solving while students roleplay with the actor/teachers. Realistic situations and age appropriate topics are used to help students grasp concepts and skills and to provide exciting drama scenes. This workshop is suggested as a post-performance companion to viewing TYA's TOUGHEST KID IN THE WORLD, a play that demonstrates problem solving through conflict resolution. This class requires two actor/teachers per workshop. Appropriate for 4th-9th grades.

4.   CIVIL WAR ROLEPLAYING: explore the local civil war curriculum in a new, dramatic way! This workshop gives students 4th grade through 9th grade acting experience and regional history knowledge as they become local historical characters during the Civil War in the Kansas City-Lawrence, Ks. area in August of 1863. The workshop employs music, costume pieces, old photographs, short monologues, and improvisation. Appropriate for 4th-9th grades.

5.   ACTING WITH INSTANT COSTUMES: encourages the participants' creativity and imagination to create costume pieces from squares of cloth. Then students become the characters they costumed in short improvised scenes. Can be adapted to be appropriate for preschoolers through 12th graders.

6.   CREATIVE DRAMATICS ONE WEEK RESIDENCY: emphasizes the creative dramatics approach to the dramatization of literature. Lesson plans can be tailored to your classes specific needs. Themes could be a style of literature, such as tall tales, a specific author, such as Beatrix Potter, or a specific theme, such as dinosaurs. Designed in units of five consecutive workshops. Appropriate for grades K-4th.

7.  CREATING CHARACTERS ONSTAGE ONE WEEK DRAMA RESIDENCY: learn theatre skills though a variety of theatre games and exercises to facilitate students creating a wide assortment of different theatrical characterizations. Helps students understand human behavior and gives them the voice, body, and imagination skills to create characters other than themselves onstage. Appropriate for grades 4th-12th.

FOR WORKSHOPS 1 to 7 ABOVE:  Workshop size is limited to 25 or fewer students per workshop.  Workshop length is 45-55 minutes depending upon school schedules and the age of the group.  An adult supervisor or the teacher of the group must be present at all times. Workshops may be scheduled at anytime throughout the year depending upon the availability of actor/teachers. FEES:  $75 per workshop for workshops requiring one actor/teacher  -  $140 per workshop for conflict resolution or civil war role-playing workshops.    (These utilize two actor/teachers and include a teacher's  packet of supporting materials and activities.)  CONSULTANCIES and DRAMA-IN-SERVICES FOR EDUCATORS are available.
